Frequently Asked Questions about Doula Services

Doula - pronounced DOO-la     Latin meaning: servant or slave.  Woman's servant.

A doula serves the pregnant or postpartum women by providing education,  evidence based information, emotional and physical support

If I have a Midwife, do I need a Birth Doula?

Short answer is yes.  A doula and a midwife have different roles and different training.  A midwife is your medical support that guides you through your pregnancy with prenatal check ups including all the physical exams, blood pressure, measuring the baby, etc.  The doula provides information, emotional and physical support.  The doula coaches you through labor, is by your side through each contraction.  Cheers you on and and gives suggestions to help you cope.  The doula breathes with you, rubs your back and helps you change positions.  The doula is with you throughout your labor, not just active labor.  Both a midwife and a doula support the mother, but they have very different roles.

What does  Postpartum Doula Do?

The Birth Doula provides support during the pregnancy and birth of your child.  The Postpartum Doula offers practical help and support after you have had your baby including newborn education, teaching parents comforting and calming techniques, doing dishes and laundry so mom can rest, prepping meals for the family, even staying overnight in the early days so that mom can maximize her sleep and healing!  A postpartum doula can be a new moms best support and secret weapon.
